One of Larry’s teaching positions was at Gar-Field Senior High School, here Larry taught over 3000 students speaking 36 different languages. The students “nobody else wanted”, the so-called “toughest kids” often ended up in Larry’s classroom in Woodbridge, VA. Defying expectations, these students frequently outscored the other classes on standardized test by the end of the year. Wanting to share strategies for success with all teachers, Larry was selected to fill a curriculum position in the Central Office. For seven years, Larry served as the Supervisor of Multicultural Education for Prince William County where Larry provided hands-on workshops for 67 schools, 3000+ teachers and 50,000 students. In 1996, Larry was given a $550,000 grant by the federal government to pilot his ideas. In 1998, Larry was selected as the Mary Hatwood Futrell Award winner by the Virginia Education Association. Larry is the author of the book 12 Powerful Words That Increase Test Scores and Help Close the Achievement Gap. Larry has been the keynote speaker at many conferences across the country, such as the National ASCD Conference, the National Association of Multicultural Education Conference, and several state NEA affiliates and many local and regional conferences. Today Larry resides in Woodbridge, VA. He is a graduate of Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
